PHILIPPIANS 2:3
“DO NOTHING OUT OF SELFISH AMBITION OR VAIN CONCEIT. RATHER, IN HUMILITY VALUE OTHERS ABOVE YOURSELVES”
I was invited for a programme in Nigeria, Port Harcourt. At the airport to pick me was the director of protocol, and some of the staff of the church.
It was a convoy. They had never met me in person, except the senior pastor. They only saw my picture, which was used to advertise the programme. When I checked out, they had my name on a placard. That was how I was to identify the people who were picking me up from the airport. I realised the man carrying the placard was still busy looking at the passengers coming out of the arrival hall, whilst I was busy trying to greet him and introduce myself. When I finally caught his attention, I saw the indignation on his face. “I didn’t look like the person he had come to pick”. I wasn’t in a suit or dressed in an expensive African dress. Just a T-shirt over jeans. Then I heard a comment; “Is this a pastor”? Aaah! This “small boy”? We came here with six (6) cars to pick this small boy? I ignored their comments. The director of protocol changed the car which was originally assigned to pick me from a landcruiser to a saloon car. The rest of the cars followed. At the hotel to receive me was my host pastor, he went to the car he assigned to pick me to welcome me, but I wasn’t in it but rather the saloon car. Immediately, he burst out in anger for the disrespect they had shown me. The arrogance, the pride, the disrespect, (I will tell you how the programme went another time)
But that’s the system that operates within the body of Christ these days. Some Christian leaders behave as if “they are next to God”. This pride and arrogance by some people in the church is what is exposing the church to all those senseless attacks and insults from the general public. Paul’s arrogance was brought down just within minutes on his way to Damascus to show his power and arrogance. Acts 9:5-6
God hates pride.
“God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble”(James 4:6, 1 Peter 5:5, Proverbs 3:34).
All the scriptures quoted warn believers about pride. Pride is deadly, it asserts the “self” or ego against God…
