PROVERBS 16:19
“BETTER TO BE LOWLY IN SPIRIT ALONG WITH THE OPPRESSED, THAN TO SHARE PLUNDER WITH THE PROUD”.( NIV)
Meekness is one of the most “abused”, and often misunderstood words, not just in the Bible, but also in social life.
I have read and heard many people say, “meekness is strength under control”. I personally agree, to some extent with those who say “meekness is strength under control”. But meekness is not weakness, and being a “doormat” for everyone to walk on. A person with a MEEK spirit is one who is teachable, humble, and patient under suffering and challenging times. A person who is flexible and can not easily be broken. A person who has a MEEK spirit has zero bitterness and resentment. Being meek is being modest, lovely, and having a sweet spirit. Meekness has no superiority or the feeling of being better than others. People who have meekness have a posture of always lowering themselves in relation to others, and there’s always an absence of pride, arrogance, and self-assertion.
No wonder Jesus said “they are blessed, and will inherit the earth” ( Matthew 5:5)
Meekness is a virtue. Any Christian, organisation or institution that wants to attain greater heights must learn to practice meekness. As human beings, we deal with many people from different backgrounds, social standing and upbringing. Meekness (patience) enables us to act in the right way with such people; with all manner of characters, trials, challenges and difficulties. Jesus invites us to learn from him; “I am meek and lowly in heart”.(Matthew 11:29).
One can not be a true follower of Christ and still be arrogant and pompous. Meekness was part of His nature. That should be part of us now; if we really exist to follow Christ, and are diligent to come to Him (Jesus) and learn from Him.
