JEREMIAH 9:23 (NIV)
THIS IS WHAT THE LORD SAYS; “LET NOT THE WISE BOAST OF THEIR WISDOM OR THE STRONG BOAST OF THEIR STRENGTH OR THE RICH BOAST OF THEIR RICHES, BUT LET THE ONE WHO BOASTS, BOAST ABOUT THIS; THAT THEY HAVE UNDERSTANDING TO KNOW ME, THAT I AM THE LORD, WHO EXERCISES KINDNESS, JUSTICE AND RIGHTEOUSNESS ON EARTH”
I am sure growing up, in your village, community or even in your school, you had friends who constantly boasted to you about their wealth or the accomplishments of their parents or even about what they had and you don’t. They brag, exaggerate or even lie about the kind of things they have. Hope this kind of attitude sounds familiar to you?
Boasting is usually connected to PRIDE. A prideful person thinks he or she is better than anyone else. When individuals exalt themselves to that level, they put themselves in a position to judge everyone else. They have an opinion about everything and everyone. There are some things about which you should not have an opinion because you simply don’t have all the information. Oftentimes, people believe that boasting is purely showing your pride and glorifying yourself. Boasting takes away the God factor in one’s life. You need to understand the difference between being blessed and boasting. Whilst your hard work may have earned you some reward and great perks, it’s important to remember that, not everyone has the same opportunities that you have.
“For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it (from the Lord) why do you boast as though you did not? 1 Corinthians 4:7
I sat in my office listening to this man bragging and boasting about the number of countries he has travelled to, his cars and houses, his investments and accomplishments. How he can arrange programmes abroad for me etc. The boldness and pomposity with which he said them…waww!!
“Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share….
1 Timothy 6:17-19(NIV)
Let others praise you. In most cases, boasting is a sign of insecurity. “He who is humble is confident; he who boasts and brags is insecure and lacking”.
To be cont…
Stay blessed always and remember to love someone and mean it.
