Many observers in the ongoing Menzgold Ghana brouhaha seems to be taken aback by the fact that the company rather chose to hire the services of local law firm Kwame Akuffo & Co instead of the heavily touted UK law firm Baker & McKenzie that the company advertised earlier.
The company in the heat of the rumpus with the Securities and Exchange Commission announced that it had contracted the UK based law firm to fight its case in court and went further to showcase and flaunt documents to authenticate the announcement.
It got many people asking whether Menzgold had no trust and confidence in Ghanaian lawyers.
Many also were those who vigorously and anxiously anticipated the arrival of executives of the foreign law firm and looked forward to some fireworks in the courts.
But the company surprised everybody when it was realized that the suit it filed against the Bank of Ghana as the first defendant and the Securities and Exchange Commission as the second defendant was under the hand of local law firm, Kwame Akuffo & Co.
As what might have led to the change in attorneys in the last minute is yet unclear, but what is clear is that Ghanaians are not happy they not will have the opportunity of witnessing the fireworks that the overhyped Baker & McKenzie would have brought into the country’s court rooms.
