You should probably carry a bottle of water and some sunscreen today because it’s going to be the hottest day of the year. The hottest weather is predicted in the southern part of the country, with temperatures potentially rising above 35C in London.

The record for June in the UK is 35.6C , which was set in London, on June 29, 1957. Met Office forecaster Greg Dewhurst said: ‘It’ll be a cloudy start to the day but we’ll soon see lots of sunshine across the South East and central parts of England.’ Festival-goers at Glastonbury are expected to have another day of hot and sunny weather, with the mercury predicted to reach 27C (81F) by 2pm on Worthy Farm.

NHS England and emergency services have issued warnings to the public to take care in the hot conditions. It follows the death of Shukri Yahya Abdi, 12, who drowned in the River Irwell in Bury on Thursday. Greater Manchester Police issued a warning about the dangers of cooling off in water. The fire services also urged the public not to light BBQs, start fires or discard smoking materials in the local countryside.

Enjoy the weather while you can because a change is expected tomorrow on the back of westerly winds from the Atlantic Ocean. Fresher conditions tomorrow will see temperatures in the south east drop by 10 degrees to around 24 or 25C. There will be some showers in the north west, Scotland and Northern Ireland, but mainly it will be dry with sunny spells.

Yesterday was the hottest day of the year so far, with the mercury hitting 30C at around 3.50pm at Achnagart in Scotland, beating 2019’s previous hottest day of 28.8C on June 2. The rising heat is in part due to warm air (‘Sahara Bubble’) originating from northern Africa that has brought a heatwave to Europe. Several countries have reported record temperatures this week, including France which hit an all-time heat record of 44.3C yesterday.
