Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for North Tongu Constituency in the Volta Region, Samuel Okuzdeto Ablakwa has attributed the popularity of the founder of the NDC and former president Jerry John Rawlings in the three northern regions of the country to the fact that he was the one that extended electricity to them several decades ago.

According to him, the NDC is way ahead of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in terms of alleviating the plight of Ghanaians through social intervention initiatives.

Mr. Okudzeto Ablakwa who was reacting to the recent challenge thrown to the NDC by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia that the NDC should show just one social intervention programme it has introduced and which has helped alleviate the plight if Ghanaian, said the NDC is credited as the only political party in the country that has extended electricity to almost all regions in the country’

‘’If you look at the NDC record in terms of coverage of electricity, you know that all the political traditions in Ghana, the NDC deserves the credit. Why do you think President Rawlings is popular especially in the three northern regions? It is because he is the first president to extend electricity to them.’’ he opined.

In his opinion, the definition of what a social intervention policy  is must be holistic and not what he describes as a shallow propagandist definition as proffered by the vice president saying ‘’it should be looked at a public policy and development theory paradigm and to submit that social intervention must be the whole full package’’.
