The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has denied media reports that its National Chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo ignored the party’s advise against honouring an invitation by the Criminal Investigations Department  (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

Mr. Ofosu Ampofo was written to on the 7th of May 2019 to report to the Police CID on May 9 to answer questions on his alleged involvement in cases of kidnapping and arson in the country.

But his party strongly opposed the move by the police with a follow up press conference by the Council of elders of the NDC in which they called the bluff of the CID.

The legal team of Mr. Ofosu Ampofo also wrote to the CID detailing why their client will not honour their invitation.

News was however rife that the NDC Chairman had ignored his party and legal team’s advice and met with the CID, reports the party has since denied.

A statement issued by the party’s Director of Communications, Kakra Essamuah read in part that ‘’ The National Democratic Congress has sighted a publication currently on Ghanaweb in which it is reported that its National Chairman, Hon. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, has ignored the advice of the party and honoured the invitation extended to him by the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police on Thursday May 9. 2019. This publication is totally false and that Hon. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo has not dishonoured his own party by meeting with the CID, nor does he intend to do so’’.

CHAIRMAN OFOSU-AMPOFO HAS NEVER MET THE CID

The National Democratic Congress has sighted a publication currently on Ghanaweb in which it is reported that its National Chairman, Hon. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, has ignored the advice of the party and honoured the invitation extended to him by the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police on Thursday May 9. 2019. This publication is totally false and that Hon. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo has not dishonoured his own party by meeting with the CID, nor does he intend to do so.

For the record, the legal team of the party delivered its own letter on the invitation to the leadership of the CID on Thursday May 9, 2019. The secretary of the CID Director, Mrs. Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, elected to receive her boss’ copy of the letter from the legal committee declining the invitation in front of Television cameras. Another copy was deposited at the secretariat of the Inspector General of the Police. Later in the same day, the CID Director General telephoned the legal team and asked for a meeting with the team together with Hon Ofosu-Ampofo. This request was flatly rejected.

On Friday May 10, 2019, the legal team had a meeting with the leadership of the CID. Chairman Ofosu-Ampofo was not in that meeting.

It is unfortunate that such a scurrilous and misleading story should find its way into the public  domain through such a medium. Mr. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo is a faithful servant of the National Democratic Congress and intends to continue as its Chairman based on the interests of the party. By this statement, the party is therefore requesting its teeming supporters and all well-meaning Ghanaians to ignore that publication.

THANK YOU

ISSUED IN ACCRA MAY 11, 2019

Signed

KAKRA ESSAMUAH

Director of Communications.
