Mobile telecommunications giant MTN has held its annual blood donation exercise with a call on the generality of the Ghanaian people to endeavor to donate blood as regularly as possible to save lives.

Chief Executive Officer of the Company, Selorm Adadevor in an address opined that the company has been able to collect some 9,500 pints of blood since the inception of the ‘Save a Life’ campaign and looks ahead to achieving the 10,000 pints milestone.

‘’From a little over a 100 pints of blood that was recorded in the first exercise, we have achieved great successes. Today we hope to collect 3,500 pints from 19 bleeding centers set up across the 10 regions of Ghana. Though ambitious, we are very hopeful of achieving this with the help and commitment of all of you. Since we started, we have raised about 9500 pints of blood we are looking forward to recording 10,000 pints milestone’’ Mr. Adadevor said.

He stressed the need for public spirited individuals and entities to become voluntary blood donors in order to meet the World Health Organisation’s requirement of 1 to 3 percent of the population having to become blood donors in order maintain adequate blood supply in the country.

He said ‘’According to the National Blood Service, Ghana has an estimated population-based blood requirement of 270,000 units of blood but only 160,000 units of blood are collected, which leaves the country with a deficit of 40%’.

The MTN boss announced that 2019 has been declared a year for the customer and that the company will be fixated at treating the customer specially.

‘’MTN has declared this year, “the year of the customer” – a year we commit to delighting our customers at all touch points. Through our Foundation, we have planned several health projects that will help improve healthcare delivery to our customers in Ghana’’ he said.

In his welcome address, the Regional Technical Manager, Teddy Hayford thanked the company’s partners in the blood donation drive for their immense contribution towards the annual exercise and for helping grow over the years.

‘’I also take the opportunity to welcome our staff donors and steering teams who work tirelessly with our partners to deliver this event. With your commitment we have grown this program into one of the most attractive projects implemented by the MTN Foundation’’ he opined.
