Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama, conveniently sidestepped answering questions on the Airbus scandal when a group of fishermen, sympathetic to the NDC, paid him a visit at his private residence in Accra.
The fishermen had sought clarification and his version of the issues with respect to the Airbus saga which has him at its epicenter.
“While I am about to take my seat, your Excellency, something that confuses us a great deal is the Airbus issue. They have brought this forgetting about galamsey, forgetting about missing tricycles and all that. The excavators, instead of being kept at the police station were housed in someone’s private place. It is worrying” the leader of the delegation queried.
However, in responding to the itemized topics he was asked, Mr. Mahama selectively concentrated on the excavators as well as the dead and buried PDS issue.
The former President did not address the Airbus issue which prefaced the issues they wanted him to talk about.
Rather, the former President went even beyond the topics asked him to address ones that were not asked, including the Electoral Commission’s decision to compile a new voters’ register for the upcoming elections and beyond.
The NDC’s flagbearer took the Jean Mensa-led EC to the cleaners, warning that if they remain adamant and recalcitrant and there is chaos, the Commission would be held responsible.
It is interesting why the former President chose to dwell on the topics that please him but ignored the Airbus scandal, the most important topic, like a plague.
European Union’s aerospace manufacturing giant, Airbus, in documents from courts, admitted to having paid a government official during the Mills-Mahama administrations and his close relative, a whopping sum of US$5 million in kickbacks to effect smooth transactions between Ghana and Airbus involving the acquisition of two Airbus Casa planes whose prices were allegedly inflated.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor has since launched investigations into the matter to help unravel the faces behind that fishy deal.
