National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu Ampofo seems to be backtracking on his support and endorsement of former president John Dramani Mahama as his preferred candidate to lead the party into the 2020 elections.
Mr. Ofosu Ampofo before his election as National Chairman of the party had indicated his preference for the former president, saying he stands tall among the lot.
But speaking on Accra based Asempa Fm and monitored by BestNewsGH.com, Mr. Ampofo said his comments were not an emphatic endorsement of Mr. Mahama and that as chairman he will ensure a level playing field for the over 12 candidates vying for the party’s presidential candidate slot.
‘’I was speaking about my observation and that is the truth. But that doesn’t mean that we will not create a level playing field for them. I have not declared my support for any candidate. I have stated categorically that if I say somebody stands tall, it doesn’t mean the person is my favourite. Now I am a national chairman, I will be very careful with my statements because you are making references to statements that I made when I was not national chairman. I will be cautious of how I speak’’ he said.
Mr. Ofosu Ampofo said the NDC was poised to take over the reins of political power in 2021, given the fact that the current NPP government is leading the country to no particular direction, adding that the economy is in shambles and that corruption has become the hallmark of the government.
