Liberty Breakfast: by Luke Barson (Rev)-“Guard Your Heart” Pt. 1

The heart is one of the human parts that has been mentioned in the Bible more than any other part. Without your heart, your body would cease to function.

Infact, I dare say, the human heart is the engine of the human body. In the Bible, the heart is a metaphor for inner life. Anytime HEART is used in the Bible, it refers to; The Spiritual, Physical, and Mental life of the believer. To the believer, the heart is the centre and the source of the believer’s spiritual life; the believer’s thinking, feeling and willing. God is usually concerned about our heart.

“The Lord does not look at the outward appearance; He looks at the heart”. People look at physical appearance; charisma, dressing, educational qualifications, Physical beauty and social status. But the Lord looks for a “willing and pure heart”. ( 1Sam.16:7)

“To be able to navigate through life successfully, it is NOT your experience, knowledge or skill that counts, it is your heart”. It is your most important treasure. We don’t guard worthless things. Because your heart is your most valuable asset, it is extremely important to watch what goes in and what comes out. We put garbage in the garbage bin. Sometimes for days, weeks or even months before it is picked up by waste collectors. It sits on the wayside unguarded and unprotected. Why? Because it is worthless and useless. Not so with your valuables. They will be stolen or destroyed by the weather. Your heart is the essence of who you are. It is your authentic-self, the core of your being. It is where all your dreams, your desires, your aspirations, your passions, and your ambitions live. It is that part of you that connects ( the believer) with God and people. Just like your physical body, if your heart ( spiritual heart ) dies, all your abilities die. “Above all else, guard your heart”. Make it a priority, because out of it comes the issues of life. Many believers forget that, their heart is the source of everything. “Wellspring of life”. Your heart overflows your thoughts, words and actions. Jesus warned the hypocrites in His days to be careful about what comes out of their mouths, because it shows what is in their hearts.

“You brood of vipers! How can you speak good things, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks”. ( Matthew 12:34)

Your words determine the kind of heart you carry. “Show me your words and actions, and I will tell you the kind of heart you carry”.
