Liberty Breakfast: By Luke Barson (Rev)-How Tolerant Are You? Pt. 5

EPHESIANS 4:1-3

The nature of my work does not allow me to be involved in active politics. ( I am apolitical).

However, I follow political debates so that I can be well informed as an academic and good citizen (though some of the panelists don’t make sense sometimes). One thing that always stands out is the intolerant nature of political actors when the odds are against them.

I once contributed to a debate on a social media platform. It was one of the topical issues about “Spiritual Fathers” and Giving. The intolerant nature of the other contributors was not only shocking, but also disappointing. If believers can be this intolerant, I wonder how they can win people to Christ? I don’t need to emphasise that, “Tolerance is the ability to respect others with dignity who do not share your opinion, religion, beliefs etc. It is being forbearing and patient with others even when they are weaker. It is seeking to understand and know others beyond our expectations, experiences or comfort zone. Tolerance is a call to endure the immaturity, hardships and short comings of others without being judgemental, yet at the same time not allowing immoral behaviour.

When believers become intolerant, prejudice and impatient, they are the direct opposite. Don’t be known only for your negativity, they will accomplish nothing. Your focus must be on the positives you desire. If you are the only person who possesses all the truth about politics, economics, development, social issues and above all, CHRISTIANITY, then there’s no point. Diversity is what creates new ideas. Nobody can glorify God in the midst of envy, strife, anger and bitterness. Remaining positive will allow us to accept others; their unique personalities, their varying maturity or immaturity. Remaining positive and accepting people does not mean we are endorsing their deviant or immoral behaviour. Good tolerance would be focusing on the strengths of people and not their weaknesses.

Sometimes, people can be so vindictive, mean and arrogant, one wonders if they are actually bearing the fruits of the Spirit.

To be cont..

Stay blessed always and remember to love someone and mean it.
