Liberty Breakfast: By Luke Barson (Rev )-How Tolerant Are You? Pt. 2

EPHESIANS 4:1-3

In my beloved country Ghana, we are bombarded everyday about the need for tolerance; Political and religious, and the need for co-existence.

Usually, this is presented as the non- judgemental of acceptance of all perspectives. But I have discovered that, those who stand for the truth (especially in political and religious circles) are often branded as narrow minded, intolerant and judgemental. When it comes to Christianity, you will hear the “later day saints and armed chair theologians saying, “Christian beliefs are matters of faith, not matters of truth”. As a result, believers are told to be tolerant of those who “crucify scriptures; you will hear critics, the so called experts and analysts say; “tolerance must override faith”. In Ghana, we are told to co-exist, we are told to tolerate one another. In trying to maintain law and order in the church, community and work place, we usually put a reasonable limit to behaviour and attitude. Though Jesus was a model of tolerance, He did not condone indecency, hypocrisy and other forms of badness in the name of tolerance.

“Woe unto you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! …( Matthew 23:13-14 NIV)

“Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light, for fear that their deeds will be exposed” ( John 3:20)

We must not accept evil just because we want to be tolerant.

“Love must be sincere; Hate what is evil, cling to what is good”.( Romans 12:9 NIV)

We have seen “hypocritical tolerance” in religious and political circles in this country. What most people tolerate under one preacher is often attacked if a different preacher preaches. Most of the things Ghanaians are tolerating today, were condemned under another government, and vice versa.

How would you respond if a church member or co-worker labels you as “intolerant”, for holding on to your values and principles as Christian in a perverse, insensitive and corrupt society?

To be cont…

Stay blessed always and remember to love someone and mean it.
