DANIEL 6:10
We all have a social responsibility to be committed in various aspects of our lives: to our families, church, employers, employees, relationships and even our health.
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honour your father and mother……”( Ephesians 6:1-5) .
There are various Biblical scriptures teaching us the principles of commitment and pointing out numerous areas of commitment. But the chief commitment of our lives is; first to God Himself before anything else.
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind; This is the greatest and the first commandment”. ( Matthew 22:37-38).
“Commitment is a decision to do what needs to be done, regardless of the cost and the dangers. Commitment must be inspired by love and characterised by sacrifice and exemplify by giving. “For God so LOVED the world that He GAVE His only begotten Son…”( John 3:16)
If a believer is not willing to sacrifice for the sake of the gospel, that believer is in the church for other purposes either than Christ. People who are genuine followers of Christ must be ready and willing to sacrifice their time, talents and resources towards that cause.
“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross DAILY and follow me”…( Luke 9:23)
The cost of commitment to Christ is total denial of one-self, cross-bearing ( is a symbol of shame and humiliation) but must be an everyday activity. Commitment should not be because of an appointment or position in the church. It should be out of love for Christ and His people. Picking up your cross daily epitomises ultimate punishment, sacrifice, selflessness and service. Commitment to Christ should be full; partial commitment is NO commitment at all. You are either cold or hot.( Revelations 3:15) lukewarmness has become the order of the day in modern Christianity.
Many believers have been crippled in their walk with God because of “half-hearted commitment”. They don’t enjoy the peace and joy of the Christian life because they are unsure of their commitment. They can’t communicate with God, and I am not sure if God listens to them. The problem is that, their commitment has not been settled. They are not fully committed to God. Note that, “the Christian life does not work without total commitment”.
