2 THESSALONIANS 3:14
Church discipline has always served as a formative and corrective means. Sound Biblical teachings and godly examples are two vital components with regards to the life of every true believer and thus; produces discipline in the body of Christ.
Unfortunately, we live in a “fast food generation”, where Christians no longer want to be taught the word when they come to church. Most people come to church looking for a short-way out of the storms of life, instead of focusing on what the Bible says. New converts must be taught the pure and sincere milk of the word and show good moral and holy lives on display among the congregation. Church discipline starts when a church member rebukes another for his or her rude behaviour one on one without judging the person. Pride will not allow some people to be rebuked. They want to live their lives the way it pleases them. Beloved, no genuine believer has another life apart from the new life found in Christ Jesus. Church discipline is not about egos, or embarrassing individuals. Church discipline is meted out to defend the honour of God. God wants His people to give a good testimony in the world.
“Do your best to present yourself as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth”. ( 2 Timothy 2:15).
Believers who persist in open misbehaviour, and who harden their hearts to correction make it difficult for others to come to Christ.
“In everything, set them an example, by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity…( Titus 2:7).
One bad character in the church can affect the rest. Church discipline is to protect the flock of Christ. If we allow bitterness in the church to go unchecked, it will not take long for corruption to spread. (Hebrews 12:15) A rotten piece of fruit always spreads its corruption. One rotten orange soon leads to two rotten oranges…. “A little leaven leavens the whole lump”. ( 1 Corinthians 5:6)
When we discipline those who continue to misbehave in the church, it serves as a warning to the rest of the Christian family..
