Liberty Breakfast: By Luke Barson (Rev)-Commitment: (Submission to Leadership)

ACTS 20:18-38

There’s an increase in disrespect for church and civil authority. Disregard for church leadership has never been greater than it is now; and it appears to be getting worst by the day.

Growing lawlessness, lack of decorum, pride and arrogance have grown beyond proportion. Why is it so? The answer is simple. Believers are not willing and ready to commit themselves to church authority. More than ever, many believers are now driven by the spirit of rebellion and “self seeking commitment”. Many believers even argue that, they are not under obligation to submit to any human institution. Many believers are actively and systematically tearing down church structures, departments and teams one after the other, in a visible and growing trend, leading the church, ( both spiritual and physical) towards anarchy on every level. Their actions have led the church to mockery, ridicule and further divided the church.

“We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labour among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves”.( 1Thessalonians 5:12-13)

If a believer is UNWILLING to commit to leadership in the church, that believer CANNOT COMMIT genuinely to Christ. Hebrews 13:17 explicitly states that; “obey your leaders and submit to them…”. A believer’s submission to leadership is an honour to God.

As a member of a local assembly (local church), you must see God as the one establishing your leaders, departments and ministries; even at your workplace, you must see your boss as being put there by God. Many believers today are guilty because they have unduly undermined church authority, insulted, criticised, abused and attacked church authority.

When you attack church authority, you have not only attacked the church, but also God. We can recognise the wrongs, but the manner in which we do it makes all the difference.
