PHILIPPIANS 2:3-7

Someone asked me a question last month about “servant leadership”. He wanted to know why people must submit to leaders who are supposed to be servants? But even before I address the question, let me state EMPHATICALLY that, “servanthood is not servitude”. Although the heart of leadership is servanthood. Mark 10:42-45 talks about servant leadership;

Jesus called them together and said;”You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must first be your servant….”( Mark 10:42-45)

Legitimate leadership has authority, but must serve the people. Meeting their aspirations and needs. In the church, those in authority must acknowledge that, their source of power and authority is from God. Those who exercise authority are only delegated by God to do so. Leadership is accountability. “There is NO thing as autonomous delegated authority”. All delegated authorities are under God’s authority. Leaders must understand this; and followers must know that, those in authority are delegated by God to do so. Anytime you disrespect authority, you are disrespecting God, and anytime a leader abuses authority, he or she is disrespecting God. The need to COMMIT and SUBMIT to authority is connected to your identity in Christ. You can submit to authority without feeling DEGRADED or DEVALUED. Simply separate your role from your identity ( refer to part 2) . Submission does not mean that you are less important, less intelligent or less godly. It just shows you are obedient to Jesus, who himself submitted to the father in heaven.

“Who being in very nature of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant…he humbled himself and became obedient to death-even death on a cross”. ( Philippians 2:6-9)

Submission is for exaltation. ( Philippians 2:9-11)

No one will ever promote an arrogant person. Those who are submissive are not cowards, they are wise in the eyes of the Lord.

Stay blessed always and remember to love someone and mean it.
