An opposition presidential candidate in the Ivory Coast has sought asylum in Ghana to avoid being arrested in his home country.
BestNewsGH.com can report that Guilaume Soro, a former rebel leader and powerful Minister in the administration of former president Laurent Gbagbo diverted his private flight and landed in Ghana over the arrest warrant.
A Public Prosecutor has since confirmed the issuance of the warrant.
A presidential candidate in next year’s election in that country, Mr. Soro was on his way back home after a month’s sojourn abroad but decided to divert his flight after picking intelligence information about the arrest warrant.
It has been reported that Mr. Soro’s wife and close associates have been picked up by the Ivorain Authorities.
Richard Adou, a public prosecutor announced in the state owned media that the arrest warrant was in connection with receiving of stolen public resources, money laundering and breaches of state security among others.
Police in the Ivorian capital according to Reuters, had to fire tears gas on Monday in order to disperse over a hundred supporters who had assembled at Mr. Soro’s headquarters.
“The elements in the possession of the intelligence services, including an audio recording, establishing clearly that the project was to be implemented shortly, the prosecutor of the republic ordered the detention and arrest of the accused,” the public prosecutor said.
Reports suggest that Mr. Soro has since returned to Europe after the brief asylum in Ghana.
