Debate on borrowing: NPP are the bigger ‘idiots’, they have an insatiable appetite for borrowing-John Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has described the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the ‘bigger idiots’ who have developed an insatiable appetite for borrowing.

The former President who has taken his nationwide campaign to solicit the votes of delegates of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to be elected as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2020 general elections said the NPP denigrated his administration and labelled them idiots for borrowing from the international and donor communities.

He is finding it difficult to comprehend why the same people who while in opposition berated and lampooned his government for borrowing to develop the country are the very ones who are globe-trotting and seeking every opportunity to borrow for the same purpose of developing the country.

He said the NDC invested most of the monies it borrowed in assets including interchanges, port expansion projects, hospitals, roads, electricity and water among others, adding that the NPP at the time criticised his government and said it was wrong to borrow.

Mr. Mahama who is seen by many political watchers at the favourite to lead the NDC into the 2020 elections said ‘’we have all your quotations about borrowing. The said any idiot can borrow, they said the money is here, we don’t need to go outside and borrow to develop Ghana and you turn around and say you can borrow and invest in assets, the first thing you should do is to apologise to Ghanaians and say oh we didn’t know, we are sorry we will borrow, but when you behave as if we are idiots, we don’t remember what you said and you say oh we will borrow even US is borrowing, of course US is borrowing so what’’.

He said in as much as the government has the leeway to borrow, they must not over borrow, adding that the current administration in almost 2 years has borrowed 40 billion cedis, a situation he argues is tantamount to over borrowing.
