The Customs Staff Association of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has hailed the appointment of Col. Kwadwo Damoah (Rtd) as the Acting Commissioner of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority.
According to a release signed by its National Secretary, Mr Gift E. Tsamah, the Association assures the the new Commissioner and the appointing authority of its support towards the attainment of the core mandate of the service.
The release came in the wake of news from the some news portals and on social media that the staff Association have planned a demonstration and a sit down strike to protest the choice of the former Army Officer as the Commissioner of Customs.
The release further stated that, “whilst it is the wish of the association, like any other security service to have its leadership appointed from among its ranks and file, we equally acknowledge the power of the appointing authority to appoint any other person of its choice in line with the vision of government”
It therefore entreated all staff and the general public to disregard the publication and to treat it with the contempt it deserves.
The Customs Division of GRA, a body with paramilitary status has in recent times been in the news for reported ‘low morale among personnel’, a phrase regarded as ‘abomination’ during SITUATION REPORTS in the security services.
A section of the public who spoke to BestNewsGH.com are of the conviction that the choice of the retired Army Officer is primarily to restore morale amongst staff to discharge their duties with integrity, fairness and service to mother Ghana.
Customs had in the past at one stage or the other benefitted the Commissionerships of Mr J Y Kwofie, former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Brigadier-General T E N Nguah, Brigadier-General Akpah, Maj-Gen Richardson Baiden with the last being Maj-Gen. Carl Mordey.
Customs, which is responsible for the collection of 60% of state revenue has lately been unable to meet set targets.
