1 JOHN 2 16
“FOR EVERYTHING IN THE WORLD-THE LUST OF THE FLESH, THE LUST OF THE EYES, AND THE PRIDE OF LIFE COMES NOT FROM THE FATHER BUT FROM THE WORLD”.
In today’s digital age, no one can deny the importance of smart phones. Many people are connected to the digital world.
Majority of people are however addicted, to the detriment of their spiritual growth. Many Christians battle with an unhealthy addiction to their social media apps. With so many popular media platforms; Whatsapp, Instagram, Snapchat Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Pinterest, Sina Weibo, etc a lot of believers have a harmful obsession with social media. This does not only affect our christian life, but personal lives and productive hours. Social media is separating many people from God, their prayer life is stagnant and their knowledge of The Word is very shallow. This culture is hindering the spiritual lives of people in the church. You want to know? Check your habits. Smart phones are designed to ease life, not to take it away.
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”. Matthew 6:21
A lady brought her sick mother to church to be prayed for. They had been in the hospital for over a month and were discharged to go home. There seemed to be no improvement and so they brought her to church. Whilst we were praying for her mother; the lady received four (4) calls within seven minutes. Then, she left the prayer scene and went to the back of the auditorium and was on her phone chatting. After the prayers and I asked her why she felt her phone was more important than the prayer for her mother? She told me her friends were discussing what to wear for a friend’s birthday party. WAWWW!! Wait; don’t judge her yet. How many times haven’t you left the auditorium in the middle of a sermon to pick calls, or chat during service and laugh out loud, or even left the service to go out and chat on your phone?
What is the first thing you do in the morning? Check your phone to see unread messages or missed calls whilst you were asleep. Are believers actually using their actions online for the purposes of God? Spending an unhealthy amount of time on social media can quickly turn into idolatry. As believers, we know that, idolatry or the worship of false gods is extremely dangerous, because it creates a space where we choose possessions, desires and works of the flesh over God.
While the Word warns us of these idols, many Christians aren’t even aware they are worshipping their smart phones on social media.
