The cane has proven to be an effective tool in instilling discipline in children, says renowned inventor, engineer and educator, Prof. Fred McBagonluri.

BestNewsGH.com reports the President of Academic City College as positing that there is is fine line between discipline and abuse.

He averred that “…There is a fine line between discipline and abuse.  I am definitely not advocating headhunting. What no one seems to answer is what replaces the cane and still provides results?  Other forms of punishment undefined unsubstantiated and untested are statements of dereliction.’’

Prof. McBagonluri’s argument comes on the back of reports attributed to deputy Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Adutwum who a believes caning or corporal punishment does not help children and that students and pupils have remained stagnant and has not seen any advancement, compared to their counterparts abroad who have never tasted a cane, but excel academically and in science in particular.

Prof. McBagonluri who took to his social media page to share his thoughts on the subject wrote:

‘’Yes a few kids were scared by the cane.  Yes.  A few people adversely reacted to quinine and paracetamol.  Do we stop dispensing these?  When your 5yr old son starts to wear his mother’s bra and other accoutrements after a few warnings what happens next? TV commentary?” He argued on social media’’
