Tanzania: parliament bans fake nails and eye lashes

The speaker of the National Assembly of Tanzania has banned lawmakers from entering parliament with fake nails and eye lashes.

The ban has been extended to visitors who go to the legislature.

The speaker, Job Ndugai announced the ban on Monday during a session of the house in Dodoma, Tanzania

Short dresses and jeans have also been banned in the country’s parliament.

Mr. Ndugai added that he was making consultations with experts before deciding whether or not to stop Member of Parliament who use excessive make-ups from entering the house.

The announcement came shortly after the deputy minister for Health, Faustine Ndugulile told the house that women with fake eyelashes and fake finger nails face serious health risks that are costly to the country.

The deputy minister said at least 700 women are admitted to hospital with complications linked to the use of false eye lashes, false finger nails and skin bleaching.
