The ruling New Patriotic Party has hit back at the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) accusing it of politicizing the issue of galamsey when they are the worst culprits under whose watch the menace gained grounds.

The NDC during its recent moment of truth encounter, accused government of paying lip service to the fight against galamsey, premising their argument on the recent pronouncements by the Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo Maafo on the arrest and subsequent deportation of Chinese woman Aisha Huang.

But the NPP in a sharp rebuttal accused the NDC of encouraging the trend which peaked between 2009 and 2016 during which period the party was in power.

According to the NPP, it is imperative for the NDC to apologise to the generality of the Ghanaian people for causing havoc to the water bodies and forest covers in the country, rather than try to shift the blame and deceive them with cheap politics and lies.

They argue that no president has ever shown commitment to the fight against galamsey than President Akufo-Addo has done, and that the president is working with the next generation in mind and not the next elections.

‘’We have ensured the provision of the law, enforcement of the law, and technology to ensure transparency and sustainable mining’’ the NPP said.

Again the party says the application of the use of drones and tracking devices for monitoring of the mining sites to ensure that the miners undertook mining in a sustainable way is another evidence of government’s commitment at ending the menace.
