Popularity in election is important, but it may not be all what matters. This may be the lesson a nationally unknown Abdul Rashid taught Nana Adabor Ibrahim Issah Ampim popularly known as Hon Aponkye in yesterdays assembly election in Nima Adukrom.
The Fast-rising social media sensation Hon Aponkye who aspired for an Assembly seat at Adukrom Nima in the Ashanti region was defeated.
Hon Aponkye polled a little over 200 votes while Abdul Rashid the winner led with more than 1000 votes.
Hon Aponkye rose to fame when he said all Ghanaian youth deserve free breakfast as a part of their fundamental human rights.
The Assembly man aspirant who quoted article 28 (3) of the 1992 constitution of Ghana to support his statement promised to provide free daily breakfast for the youth in his electoral area if voted into power come December 17th.
On election day, yesterday in the morning, to prove how feasible his promise is, Hon Aponkye did prepare corn dough porridge or moli koko for voters.
He said only Ghc20 cedis worth of corn dough can make a huge bowl of porridge for the youth to have their fundamental human rights guaranteed, with a pack of Lipton tea as an option.
He also explained that when he is voted into power, he will provide “one house one biogas toilet, free dustbins on all the streets and free canopies and chairs for every ceremony among others”, promises which have made him an instant hit on social media with his videos garnering thousands of shares, views and comments.
Clearly, the people of Nima Adukrom did not buy his message.
