The family of former president John Dramani Mahama is to blame for the economic mess that the current ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government is grappling with and fixing.

According to the NPP, the family of the former president destroyed the asset base of the various banks through the huge loans they took and failed to pay back.

Addressing a press conference in response to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) ‘moment of truth’ press conference held on January 16, 2019 on the Menzgold saga, the NPP’s national Communications director, Yaw Buabeng Asamoa said the NDC has no moral right to blame the NPP government for the current crisis that has plagued the distressed gold trading firm.

According to him, the Menzgold crisis is one of many problems that the erstwhile NDC administration left for the current government to clear.

‘’We had to clear the mess in the banking sector, it cost us a lot of money, licensing ghost banks and running the money around amongst themselves including the family of the then president taking huge loans from the banks and destroying their asset base, we have managed to clear that’’ he said.

Mr. Buabeng Asamoah who is also the Member of Parliament for the Adentan Constituency said government has also been able to clear various arrears the NDC left across the various sectors of the economy.

‘’We have cleared the arrears they left across the economy, from health to school feeding, not to talk about road fund. They actually took government money at some stage to put in private banks at a low interest rate and borrow the money back at a higher interest rate’’ he said.

He added that the NPP will allow the law to work and that in doing so, nobody would be shielded.
