The Wa campus of the University for Development Studies (UDS) will be named after Chief Simon Diedong Dombo, popularly known as Chief SD Dombo, an illustrious son of the Upper West Region.
This came to light at the unveiling of the legacy of Chief Dombo and the launch of the SD Dombo Foundation for Development & Leadership Studies currently underway at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC).
Attending the event which main objective is to celebrate Chief Dombo is the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and other leading party and government functionaries.
Chief S. D. Dombo played a pioneering role in the Gold Coast Legislative Council and the fight for Ghana’s independence. He represented the Northern Territories through the vehicle of the Northern Peoples Party (NPP), a party of which he was the Leader and Co-founder.
Chief S. D. Dombo became Ghana’s first official Opposition Leader in his capacity as Leader of the NPP. Upon the merger of the NPP with the other opposition parties, including the National Liberation Movement (NLM), to form the United Party (UP), Chief Dombo was elected Deputy Leader of the UP with Dr. Busia as the Leader.
Chief Dombo was the first educated chieftain from the Upper West region. He played major roles in bringing development and education to region.
