President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has extended the closure of Ghana’s borders by four weeks.

The extension takes effect from 1 am on Monday, May 4, 2020.

“With the suspension of all public gatherings still in force and our schools closed, Government has taken the decision to extend further the closure of our borders for a month effective 1 am on Monday 4th May until Sunday 31st of May,” President Akufo-Addo stated.

The President said this when he addressed workers in Ghana at the Virtual Labour Day Celebration organised by GBC and Organised Labour at the studios of the State-Broadcaster, GBC.

He noted that the extension of the border closure is to prevent travellers from importing the virus.

“We know that the overwhelming majority of positive cases came from travelers, so we have no option but to keep our borders closed until we are confident that we have put in place measure to prevent travellers from importing the virus”

Ghana’s air, sea and land borders were closed on Sunday, March 22, 2020 as part of efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19 in the country.
