Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the McDan Group, Dr. Daniel McKorley has recounted how the journey to success began for him, and the factors that accounts for his ability to brave the storms and odds of life, to attain greater heights in various spheres of human endeavor.

Dr. McKorley who is also the Founder and Chairman of the McDan Foundation opened up on how life began for him, when he delivered the opening address at the just ended Grand Finale of the Season 1 of the McDan Entrepreneurship Challenge (MEC) at the National Theater in Accra on Friday, February 21, 2020.

The Business Magnate who holds various revered traditional titles and offices across the country, recounted how he once sold kerosene and bofrot, became a driver’s mate and a pupil teacher, just to make ends meet.

BestNewsGH.com reports him as saying ‘’Starting from the streets of Labadi, selling kerosene and bofrot, I was once a drivers’ mate, Acra-Madina-Accra, I was once a pupil teacher, I was once a labourer, a construction labourer. If you can carry blocks more than me, then you’re strong. But today, God has given me something special. And this is what I’m sharing with the next generation. If I don’t do it, posterity will judge me. ‘’

Passionately and emotionally charged, Dr. McKorley continued that ‘’I believe I dreamt of the impossible, but I also believe with determination, resilience, and handwork, I could keep going. Such is the dream of our finances. A young individual from the audience here and someone watching at home. I have seen all sides of entrepreneurship firsthand and this is what I know for sure. Failure is a must, mistakes are your best guide, struggle is inevitable and success is achievable.’’

On the McDan entrepreneurship Challenge, Dr. McKorley admonished the 10 finalists to eschew all acts of negativity including indiscipline and the various vices that tend to adversely impact them.

He posited that ‘’We have bright young men in Ghana, but the attitude is wrong, indiscipline, and a lot of things are affecting the youth. Because of that they can’t scale up, they can’t get to the level we have gotten to. This is why McDan is here today. McDan speaks to the heart of the entrepreneur, it is not about the 100, 000 dollars. As I keep telling them, if you give a 100,000 dollars to an idiot, he will burn it, if you give 100 dollars to a smart businessman, he will turn it around into a 100, 000 dollars. This is why McDan is here today, we speak to the entrepreneur, we’re looking at the person behind the business, every business has somebody. We’re investing into them, not really the business.’’

The climax of the night saw Mr. Alhasan Hamza Koligu of Alkoh Shea, winning the maiden edition of the McDan Entrepreneurship Challenge, with the ultimate prize of a 100,000 Dollars.

The nine other finalists were not left out as Dr. McKorley presented each one of them with a cheque for GHC 25,000 each, plus a pledge by the Ministry for Business Development to support them with GHC 300,000.

The McDan Entrepreneurship Challenge gives impetus to young people who have original ideas and are willing to develop these ideas to translate into viable businesses.

These young entrepreneurs are mentored, coached and groomed by seasoned professionals and consultants to enable them take their businesses to the next level.
