The Concerned youth of Gambaga in the North East Region are up in arms against the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama, accusing her of clandestinely trying to move the East Mamprugu Municipal Assembly Headquarters from Gambaga to Nalerigu.
The anger of the youth, BestNewsGH.com sources report, emanate from the appointment and posting of a District Census Officer (DCO) by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) to the East Mamprusi Municipal Assembly for the 2020 Population and Housing Census.
A letter of appointment the cited, according one of the leaders of the concerned youth of Gambaga, had the East Mamprusi Municipal capital as Nalerigu, instead of Gambaga, a situation that gave them cause to worry.
‘’For example, the District Census Officer for Yagaba/Kubori is stationed at Yagaba the District capital, the Officer for West Mamprusi Municpality is stationed in Walewale the Municipal capital, while the Officer in charge of Bunkpurugu District is resident in Bunkpurugu. Again, the Officer in charge of Yunyoo District lives in Yunyoo the capital and the officer for Chereponi District is also stationed in Chereponi. So why is the case of Gambaga different?’’ the group quizzed.
The group tells BestNewsGH.com that they thought the Minister who is also the Member of Parliament for Nalerigu/Gambaga constituency would have learned some lessons after the fierce resistance she met for siting the capital of the North East Region in Nalerigu instead of Gambaga which had remained the District capital all these years.
‘’As we speak, if care is not taken, the Municipality may erupt in a series of demonstrations against the actions of the Minister because if we allow this to pass, the tendency for things to continue this way is very high. This can divide the Region and we’re afraid of the implications, particularly as we head for the polls in December’’ one of the leaders of the group noted.
The group argue that they are convinced the top officials from Mamprugu are misleading the president in terms of happenings in the area.
The stated that the president was misled into naming Nalerigu the regional capital instead of Gambaga when it is clear that Gambaga is the most qualified and developed to contain a regional capital.
To buttress their point, they cited the example in which some government appointees posted to the region are living in Gambaga and commuting to Nalerigu on a daily basis to carry out their duties.
They say they united in their conviction that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will heed their calls to make the Capital of the North East Region a twin one encapsulating Gambaga and Nalerigu, premised on the fact that Gambaga is the most endowed in terms of infrastructure.
