His Excellency the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo has offered the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) and Meridian Ports Services (MPS) another window of opportunity to negotiate operational conditions at the Port of Tema.
The Acting Director of Port, Tema, Mrs. Sandra Opoku disclosed this to the BestNewsGH.com in a telephone conversation.
According to Mrs Opoku, the president’s directive to the two organizations, GPHA and MPS, is to arrive at a mutual understanding as both operate the Tema Port.
Staff of GPHA today spent between 0730hrs and 0930hrs at the entrance to the Main Harbour clad in red, amid drumming and dancing to protesting some clauses in the MPS contract which operations they believe are inimical to the sustainability of the Ports Authority.
The Union Chairman of GPHA, Mr Emmanuel Neequaye, when contacted intimated that the workers action today is to protect both the Authority as a state entity and individual workers’ jobs.
According to Mr Neequaye, recent directive from the Commissioner General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Mr Kofi Nti, to the effect that all reefer containers discharged from Terminal Three of MPS be stacked there and duties paid at the detriment of the multimillion dollar GPHA operated Reefer Terminal is unacceptable and not conducive to the Authority.
