The government has committed resources to physical projects in three regions to provide the infrastructural foundation for the administration of the areas.

The Western North, Bono East and Ahafo regions are currently benefiting from the construction of new administration blocks to provide conducive office spaces for the various regional coordinating councils (RCCs), and the education, health and agriculture directorates in the three regional capitals.

The projects – which also include the construction of court buildings, structures that will serve as police commands, and staff bungalows for various categories of public sector workers- are being funded by the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF).

Inspection of facilities

A seven-member committee of the Local Government Committee of Parliament has toured the areas to inspect some of the DACF-funded projects, as well as in some parts of the Ashanti and Bono regions to establish how the funds are being utilised.

The five-day tour was to allow the team, led by the Ranking Member on the committee, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, to also acquaint themselves with the challenges facing the execution of projects.

In February 2019, Parliament approved GH¢2,079,426,613 as the DACF for all ministries, departments and agencies for 2019.

Out of that, GH¢200 million was devoted to the construction of offices for the new RCCs, with seed money of GH¢88 million for their operations.

Regional projects

Some of the projects the team inspected included the construction of a GH¢17.65 million three-storey RCC office complex and GH¢3.1 million three separate senior staff bungalows in Sefwi Wiawso, capital of the Western North.

The RCC administration block is currently 96 per cent complete.

Another project in the region is the construction of two-storey administration block at Bodi for the regional health directorate.

At Goaso, capital of Ahafo Region, the GH¢16.9 million RCC administrative block was 67 per cent complete, while a two-storey administration block for the health directorate at Hwediem, also in the region, was under construction.

At Techiman in the Bono East Region, the GH¢16.9 million RCC administration block was 68 per cent complete, while the construction of bungalows for senior staff of the RCC was also ongoing.

District projects

The DACF projects at the various district assemblies in the three regions, along with those in the Ashanti and the Bono regions, were found to be at various stages of execution.

They included the construction of two-storey administration blocks, bungalows for staff of the assemblies, departments and agencies, as well as two-storey court edifices and police posts.

The beneficiary districts included Bia East in the Western North Region, Dorma East and Berekum West in the Bono Region, and Kintampo North in the Bono East Region.

Similar two-storey administration blocks and 15 two-storey court buildings were being constructed for various MMDAs in the Ashanti Region at a total cost of GH¢15.9.
