The group is calling on the government to revise upward the rate of increment in transport fares by 30% instead of the announced 10% hike.
A statement issued by the group on Wednesday, September 11, 2019, said the latest hike in fuel prices is having a toll on their businesses hence the need for government to push up the rate further so as to cushion them.
“Prices of petroleum products have gone high after the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) directed the Oil Marketing Companies to start applying the revised Energy Sector Levies, we can’t afford to work in vain,” the statement said.
The Ghana Private Road and Transport Union has increased public transport fares by 10 percent following the recent hike in fuel prices.
The new fares take effect from 16 September 2019.
The fares cover intra-city (Trotro), intercity (long-distance) and shared taxicab services.
According to the union, the hike has become necessary to enable its members to stay afloat.
Prices of petroleum products went up by some 3.7 percent on Monday, 2 September 2019, after the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) directed Oil Marketing Companies to begin applying the revised Energy Sector Levies.

We the Concerned Drivers Association are calling on the government to increase transport fares by 30% following the recent increase in fuel prices.
The latest hike in fuel prices is having a toll on our income hence the need for government to increase transport fares by 30% with immediate effect.
We are being cheated here, every time the prices of fuel go up but transport fares remain the same.
How is the government expecting us to get our money to take care of our families? We want the GPRTU and the government to increase the fares to about 30 percent because currently we the drivers are at a lost.
