The National Organiser of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammi Awuku has revealed that Ghana’s national security has recruited cripples, blind persons, prostitutes and shoe makers as part of it architecture.

According to him, these people among others belonging to other categories have been roped into the National Security apparatus to help elicit information that will propel the mandate of the national security.

His comments come on the back of the widespread ridicule that greeted the appearance of Mr. Akomea, popularly known as Double, a national security operative at the Emile Short Commission during which he chose to speak in Twi.

Many people, particularly those in the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has lampooned government over the matter, saying illiterates are being recruited and employed into the National Security.

But speaking on an Accra based radio station Thursday March 7 2019, Mr. Awuku opined that those engaged in such acts are doing so out of ignorance and nativity.

He said ‘’ all over the world, national security have cleaners at the airports who are operatives, you can find cripples by the road side soliciting for arms and you might think the fellow is just a normal poor person begging on the streets, but the person can be a national security operative and we have some in Ghana. Blind people and even shoe makers. The national security has hundreds and thousands of them as operatives. It depends on the kind of information they want such people to furnish them with. Those who feed the national security with information from the high seas, the seamen, some of them cannot write their names’’ he said.

Mr. Awuku cited former South African President Jacob Zuma and Russian President Vladmir Putin as people who were co-opted into the intelligence agencies of their respective countries without any formal education but rose through the ranks to become presidents.
