COVID-19: Nigeria imposes two-week lockdown in Abuja and Lagos

The Nigerian government has imposed a two-week lockdown on the two main cities of Lagos and Abuja over the COVID-19 virus.

BestNewsGH.com sources say the lockdown which begins today, Monday March 30, 2020 will start from 23:00 local time (22:00 GMT).

It will be apply to Ogun state which borders with Lagos.

President Muhamadu Buhari warned all people in the affected areas to stay at home, while offices and businesses also close.

Essential service providers including food shops and hospitals have however been exempted from the lockdown.

Traveling to or from the affected cities have also been banned.

The president announced that a special fund of $40m has been set aside to help in the fight against the virus.

Nigeria has recorded 97 confirmed cases of coronavirus, and one death.

Africa has not been hit as hard by the virus as most other continents, but the number of cases and deaths is on the rise.
