The Majority Leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu has clarified that costing for the proposed new 450 capacity parliamentary chamber has not been concluded yet.
According to him, no concrete decision on the issue has been taken yet and that procurement processes have not even commenced.
Speaking at a press conference to clarify issues and misconceptions surrounding the announcement of the proposed new chamber, the Majority Leader who is also the Member of Parliament for Suame constituency in the Ashanti Region said Ghanaians have misconstrued what the project is all about.
‘’The chamber is a 450 seater and not a 450 member chamber as being speculated by Ghanaians’’ he averred.
Mr. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu listed various groups who usually visit the house and cited the limited space to contain such groups as a challenge that Parliament is grappling with.
He stated that the idea to have the new chamber is not borne out of the desire to increase the number of Members of Parliament, but to be able to accommodate the growing number of visitors who throng there daily.
He said the legislature and government will not take any decision that will be inimical to the generality of the Ghanaian people and will be always be guided as such.
