A 25-year-old man has been arrested for attempting to kidnap two children at Nyinahin Baniekrom in the Atwima Mponua district of the Ashanti Region.

The suspect, Joseph Appiah, popularly called Kojo Appiah, was arrested by the locals and handed over to the Nyinahin police on Saturday, 15 June 2019.

Dabo Francis, the Unit Committee Chairman of Baniekrom told Kumasi 104.1 FM’s Elisha Adarkwah that the locals got suspicious after hearing the screams of some children who were crying and shouting that the suspect had abducted their two siblings and taken them into the bush.

He said an announcement was made at the Community Information Centre and messages were also sent to the nearby communities where the youth organised themselves and gave the suspects a hot chase.

The suspect, however, abandoned the children and attempted to escape upon noticing that an alarm had been blown on him.

Mr Dabo said the suspect was arrested after a five-hour search and chase and later handed over to the police.

He said the two children, ages 3 and 4 years, have been handed over to their parents.

The suspect, he said, is currently in the custody of the Nyinahin police command assisting with investigations.

Meanwhile, the police have declined to comment on the matter.
