57 people die from severe burns while siphoning fuel from a tanker which had an accident

Tanzania has been thrown into a state of shock and mourning after at least 57 people died following the explosion of a fuel tanker.

The victims got burnt while scooping fuel from the tanker which was involved in an accident in Morogoro, some 200 kilometres away from Tanzania’s economic hub, Dar es Salaam.

Local residents told the Associated Press that scores of residents gathered around the tanker and were siphoning fuel from it when the explosion occurred.

Steven Kabwe, Regional Police Commander told local media that 57 bodies have so far been recovered.

He added that several others who suffered burns of various degrees have been transported to hospitals and are being treated.
