A 34-year-old furious Ugandan woman almost beat her husband to death following a dispute over his continual delay in paying her bride price.

According to reports from Tuko news, the woman, Beatrice Ajio, from Lugbara smashed a bunch of empty bottles over her 30-year-old husband, Juma Candia’s, head

The angry Beatrice was also reported to have stabbed Candia in the hand with a knife.

According to a police statement, Candia and his wife argued over his inability to pay her.

“My wife, with whom I have lived for two years, was not happy that I was delaying to pay bride price. But I kept on explaining that I did not have enough money,” Candia said.

The neighbours who witnessed the incident said they thought that the man had died.

Importance of bride price

Bride price is a compulsory part of the Lugbara culture in Uganda, where a man must pay his wife an agreed price for marrying him.

One of Beatrice’s relative who spoke to newsmen said “Usually, it is the elders to speak about payment of bride price that is done on mutual consent. This should have been an act done without consent of the elders. If there were misunderstandings, the elders should have been involved.”

The police are currently searching for Beatrice.
