South African Wamkele Mene sworn in as first Secretary-General of AfCFTA Secretariat

Wamkele Mene, a South African has been sworn-in as the first Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat.

Mr. Mene who was elected in February this year, was sworn-in today, Thursday, March 19, 2020 at the Headquarters of the African Union (AU) Commission in Addis Ababa.

BestNewsGH.com can report that Mr. Mene is a former Head of Mission to the World Trade Organisation for South Africa.

He will be based in Ghana, where the AfCFTA Secretariat will be hosted.

The AfCFTA agreement initially requires members to remove tariffs from 90% of goods, allowing free access to commodities, goods, and services across the continent.
