Samsung Electronics introduces the AI-driven ‘Galaxy S24′ smartphone series, showcasing its in-house generative AI ‘Samsung Gauss’ and the on-device AI ‘Galaxy AI,’ enabling functionality without internet access. An AI phone extends beyond typical smartphone capabilities with added AI services.

The ‘Galaxy Unpacked 2024′ event is scheduled for Jan. 18 at 3 a.m. KST, to be held at the SAP Center in San Jose, California. During the event, Samsung will present the Galaxy S24 series as the next-gen smartphone and emphasize its role as the first AI phone, emphasizing a commitment to overcoming smartphone limitations through AI advancements.

One of the notable AI services unveiled before Unpacked is real-time call translation. Unlike previous translation services that required separate app installations like Naver Papago or Genie Talk, the Galaxy S24, featuring Samsung Gauss, aims to offer on-the-fly translation of the other person’s call. This feature works seamlessly, even if the other party doesn’t use an AI phone. Users can choose to listen to the translated conversation in voice or check it in real-time as text, essentially engaging in a conversation with an interpreter simultaneously.

Galaxy AI plays a crucial role in enhancing the camera functions, including photos and videos. The Galaxy S24 Ultra offers a 100x optical camera zoom, consistent with its predecessor, the Galaxy S23 Ultra. However, with the integration of Galaxy AI, users can now experience an extended 150x camera zoom, a 1.5 times increase. Photos captured with the 100x optical zoom undergo digital enhancement by Galaxy AI through software correction, resulting in improved image quality. Samsung Electronics’ U.S. branch has shared the message “Zoom with Galaxy AI is coming” on its website for this reason.

Galaxy AI also aids in editing captured photos and videos. In cases where the subject is off-center, Galaxy AI automatically extends the background, repositioning the subject to a different location. It may offer features such as capturing a new background or providing editing points for convenient adjustments, particularly when dealing with shaky visuals or videos without sound.

Galaxy AI serves as a tool for summarizing content within web pages or news articles. When summarizing, it prioritizes the inclusion of familiar words, expressions, and phrases that users commonly use. Additionally, it can instantly identify the species of a plant when clicked in a photo and translate English or Chinese expressions found in an article upon selection.
