The opposition National Democratic Congress, (NDC) has registered its disappointment at the ruling of the Supreme Court Thursday, to allow the Electoral Commission to proceed with its new voter registration compilation exercise without the inclusion of the existing voters ID card as one of the qualifying documents for registration.

Addressing a late Thursday night media briefing to react to the Supreme Court ruling, not only did party Leader and Flagbearer for the 2020 elections, former President John Dramani Mahama describe the ruling as one that left legal experts confounded and the nation divided, he said it was equally worrying that the Supreme Court deferred its reasoning for its decision to July 15, by which date the EC would be a fortnight into the exercise.

The EC has announced it will proceed with the exercise from June 30 to August 6, 2020.

According to former President Mahama, the plan to compile a new voters register was in pursuit of a long-held agenda by government to foist itself on the people, desperate that “on account of its very poor performance in government” its political survival lies in the manipulation of the electoral process to exclude a section of Ghanaians who they suspect may not renew their mandate at the polls.

He said a “caring, compassionate and responsible government would not push” the nation to this brink, more so during a major pandemic like COVID-19 that is causing so much anguish among the citizenry.

“It is deeply regrettable that the Electoral Commission, which should be independent, has made itself a willing tool in the execution of this most diabolic agenda”, he said to spontaneous applause by a large number of leaders of the party in attendance.
