Namibia swears in new President

Nangolo Mbumba has been sworn in as the fourth President of Namibia following the death of Dr Hage G Geingob this morning.

“I Nangolo Mbumba do hereby swear, that I strive to the best of my ability to uphold, protect and defend as the supreme law of the Republic of Namibia and faithfully obey , execute and administer the laws of the Republic of Namibia, that I will protect the independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and the materiel and spiritual resources of the republic of Namibia and that I will endeavour to the best of my ability to ensure justice for all the inhabitants of Namibia, So help me God,” Mbumba said in recording of a minute and 30 seconds as he raised his hand in the air.

Geingob who was serving his second term died in the city of Windhoek in Namibia at Lady Pohamba Hospital were the public was constantly updated on his cancer diagnosis. His brief treatment abroad was not paid for by tax payers and he was mostly treated at home.

Namibia press reports that Mbumba will serve as President for the remaining 10 months as they await a new election in 2024 according to the constitution.

“If the vacancy occurs more than one (1) year before the date on which Presidential elections are required to be held, an election for the President shall be held in a accordance with the provision of article 28 hereof within a period of ninety (90) days from the date on which the vacancy occured and pending such elections the vacant office shall be filled in a accordance with the provisions of article 34 hereof.” the constitution partly states.

Mbumba also saw the swearing in of Netumbo Nandi Ndaitwah, 71 as Namibia’s first female Vice President.

Netumbo had previously served as the deputy prime minister since 2015.

Mbumba has been second vice president since 2018 to 2024. Mbumba is a member of the southwest Africa People’s organisation (SWAPO).

Mbumba who graduated from southern Connecticut state University in the United States with a Bachelor of Science in 1971 and Masters in science in Biology in 1973 at the same University was previously a secretary general of SWAPO.

Mbumba previously headed the Agricultural, water and rural development ministry from 1993 to 1996, then finance from 1996 to 2003, information and broadcasting from 2003 to 2005, education from 2005 to 2010 and safety and security from 2010 to 2012.
