The Manya Krobo Traditional Council has denied knowledge of members in the council of a group which is pushing for the abolishment of the present form of chieftaincy practice in the traditional area and in place introduce the ANIKAKA system that ceased to function 184 years ago.

Under the ANIKAKA system, all the present divisions (clans) would attain Paramount status and have the overlordship position rotated every two years

This was disclosed at a press conference which was held by the Manya Krobo Traditional Council at Odumase Krobo last week in reaction to an earlier one held by a group calling itself Standing Committee of Divisional Chiefs of the Manya Krobo Traditional Council.

The group which is propagating the return to the obsolete ANIKAKA system had since announced for the reconstitution of the Manya Krobo Traditional Council, went ahead to put in place a structure to appoint it’s first paramount chief.

As per their arrangement, the group is claiming it does not recognize the Konor (Paramount Chief) of the Manya Krobo Traditional Area, Nene Sakite II.

The Chief of Akuse who doubles as the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Manya Krobo Traditional Council, Nene Asada Hor, briefing the media stated that documents of the supposed declaration were signed by the present Manya Aklomuase Divisional Chief, Nene Sasraku IV and other sixteen individuals who are unknown to the traditional council

He went on that from time immemorial, any division without a chief for various reasons is represented by a regent to perform functions at the council.

The PRO named the ANIKAKA idea divisions as Djebiam, Akwenor, Suisi, Piengua and Dorm.

On the 23rd of October 2019, Nene Sasraku IV, a Senior Divisional Chief addressed a press conference at Odumase Krobo and declared Independence from the paramountcy of Nene Sakite II citing disagreements with the Konor.

The statement partly read, “We the people of Manya Krobo state of the Manya Krobo Traditional Council wishes to reclaim our sovereignty over the traditional royal chieftaincy hierarchy, which was usurped for 184 years, when the political office of the Konorship was created”.

The Konorship of Manya Krobo state was a political office created by Konor Odonkor Azu in 1835, to make himself the overlord of Manya Krobo state. This political office conferring on the occupant the overlord and absolute control of Manya Krobo state is no longer fit for purpose. The Konorship with power vested in Konor at Odumase, has outlived it’s relevance and purpose”.

During the traditional council-held press conference which was addressed in turn, the Manya Aklomuase Division stated that the Division under Nene Sasraku IV, decided to rebel against the traditional council because a few citizens had clandestinely, caused plunder to state property, citing some lands.

The Dorm Division stated that they attempted to usurp the Paramount Stool after the demise of Nene Oklemekuku Azu Mate Korle, Konor of Manya Krobo. They petitioned the National House of Chiefs claiming the Konor’s stool but had lost that suit in 1997.

The ruling of the National House of Chiefs stated that:

They were immigrants from Denkyira who came to seek refuge in Krobo land but had not subjugated the Krobos in any war. For that reason they can never become Konor over a host tribe

Furthermore, the stool they occupy now had been created for them by the Akwenors in Krobo land.

The Djebiam Division on their part stated emphatically that all the subchiefs consented to the appointment of Nene Tettey-Ku Gbadaji I as regent for Djebiam and that he was not imposed on them by Nene Sakite II

The Akwenor Division on their part opined that it would be an action worthwhile if the protesters called for elevation of the Divisional Chiefs to the status of Paramount chiefs were simultaneously matched with advocacy for the elevation of the Konor to the status of a King to wield powers of the overlord  of Manya Krobo.

The Piengua Division subchiefs stated that the reason why they failed to swear the oath of allegiance to Nene Tetteh Zogli III (Francis Tetteh Osakonor) is that another PIENGUA Divisional Chief was also installed with the stool name Nene Tettey Akora Zogli I.

This, they said resulted into a case still pending in the High Court, Koforidua for the determination of the true Piengua Chief.
