Mahama’s men mock Atta Mills government’s economic record in latest NDC press release

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has ridiculed the economic record of the government of late President Mills in its latest bid to cleanse former President Mahama.

In a press statement issued on Tuesday, which the NDC said contained 60 achievements of former President Mahama in response to Vice President Bawumia’s 50 reasons why President Akufo-Addo has performed better than Mahama, the NDC, in their haste to respond to Bawumia, ended up scoring an embarrassing own goal.

Point 25 of the NDC press statement, clearly indicted and ridiculed the administration of late President Mills by claiming that John Mahama’s government, which succeeded the Mills regime in 2012, inherited a very weak economy.

“John Mahama’s government inherited an economy that was running a high deficit, with increasing inflation and interest rates characterised by a rapidly depreciating currency,” the NDC statement said of the Mills government.

In the same statement, the NDC ironically listed the infamous Senchi economic forum, which decided to take Ghana to IMF for economic relief as an achievement of the Mahama administration.

Ironically, Dr. Bawumia, then running mate to Nana Akufo-Addo had warned the Mahama government it risked taking the country to the IMF due to what he termed as the government’s bad economic management.

Mills achievements listed as Mahamas

While the NDC press statement indicted the economic record of the Mills administration in a bid to cleanse the Mahama administration’s poor economic record, it surprisingly listed various infrastructure projects by the Atta Mills administration like

the Tetteh Quarshie Adentan road, Tarkwa Bogoso Anyanfuri road, Ridge hospital expansion, University of Ghana Hospital, Military Hospital in Kumasi, Maritime Hospital, renovation of irrigation dams and free laptops as projects initiated by the Mahama administration.

Public Reaction

Reactions to the NDC statement has been mixed. While obvious NDC fanatics have been trumpeting what their party issued, some eagle-eyed analysts have questioned the sincerity of the press release.

The NDC statement appears to have been hurriedly pulled from the party’s 2016 manifesto, as many sentences are written in ‘present terms’ as though the NDC is in government and the projects are ongoing, thereby making a large section of the statement grammatically incorrect.

This obvious gaffe has attracted widespread mockery on social media for the NDC, who are being ridiculed for not reading through their press release.

Some have also question why NDC would set out to publicly ridicule the economic record of the government of late President Mills, as well as ‘steal’ Mills’ infrastructure projects for Mahama a bid to cleanse the NDC Flagbearer.

Ironically, available data shows that the John Mahama government rather inherited a healthier economy when he succeeded Mills, contrary to what the NDC statement put out.

All economic indicators, including inflation and the rate of the cedis depreciation were healthier under the Mills administration, but declined considerably under the Mahama administration.
