Local farmers have received a boost following the release of some 50 Million Ghana Cedis to the National Food Buffer Stock Company, (NAFCO) to purchase their produce.
BestNewsGH.com Reports the Minister of State at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Gyiele Nurah who made the disclosure, as positing that the move is part of a deliberate plan by government to boost the Agric sector.
Dr. Nurah who was speaking at a forum in Accra said “By the President’s directive, GHS50 million has been released to the Buffer Stock to fill all their stores across the country. We can be sure that all stores that will be stocked means that farmers will not have a problem again.”
NAFCO was established by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to ensure the security of farmers while insulating them against losses, emanating from anticipated production increases.
As part of efforts aimed at modernizing the Agric sector, government has initiated several interventions it deems necessary to help raise the productivity levels of local farmers.
Interventions such as fertilizer subsidies, the introduction of block farming resulting in mechanization and extension services to cover a chunk of farmers have been rolled out.
Again, the introduction of a huge number of tractors and varied farm machinery at subsidized rates, leading to high levels of mechanization has been some of the moves initiated by government to transform the sector.
