The Inspector-General of Police, Dr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has led a team comprising officers from operations, investigations, and intelligence units to Bawku in the Upper East Region to assess the security situation in the area.

According to a statement issued by the Ghana Police Service on April 10, 2025, the visit follows a violent confrontation between some local youth and the police, which resulted in the death of one individual, Fuseini Iddrisu, and left five others injured.

The injured include a police officer and an immigration officer, all of whom are currently receiving medical treatment.

The statement added that calm was restored to the area on April 9, through the joint efforts of the Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces.

The police further disclosed that some of their properties were destroyed during the unrest.

These included two police vehicles, a rented police accommodation in Binduri, and the private residences of some police officers.

The Police Service reassured the public that security has since been heightened in Bawku and its surrounding areas, with joint Police and Military patrols actively ongoing.

“While at Bawku, the IGP and his team will also commiserate with the deceased family, visit the injured persons on admission and reach out to officers who lost their properties as a result of the violence,” the statement said.

The police reaffirmed their commitment to working collaboratively with the Ghana Armed Forces, traditional leaders, opinion leaders, and all relevant stakeholders to maintain peace, security, and order in Bawku.
