Heads of various Senior High Schools in the Ashanti region have expressed gratitude to the government for the decision to embark on a mass fumigation exercise to rid the schools of bedbugs.

The heads who spoke when the exercise being done by Waste Management experts Zoomlion got to their schools last week described the exercise as timely and prayed it is institutionalized and done regularly.

Headmistress of Joaso Senior High School Margaret Nana Halm-Markin who spoke during the exercise at her school said, “infact this exercise is a life saver for us. Though we had started something like this, this has come to make our work complete. Bedbugs are a big problem for our students and I believe this will help the students who often complain of tiredness due to lack of sleep as a result of the bugs.

…..we hope that government makes this a routine exercise so that at least if not each term, we can have it annually to help our students”.

On her part, Alice Martha Adjei the Headmistress of the St. Mary’s Girls’ SHS in Konongo said, “my students have been suffering a lot from these bedbugs so this exercise will help us get rid of them so that they can sleep soundly”.

Madam Alice however appealed to government to also consider routine fumigation exercises to help the school get rid of snakes that she says worry them regularly.

“This school has another problem which is snakes. Almost every night we find snakes either in the classroom or dormitories and this is a worry to my students who are all girls. So if government can help us we will be very grateful”, Madam Alice stressed.

In all the 187 public and private SHS in the Ashanti which benefitted from the exercise, the heads all appealed for a sustainance of the exercise to help the students study soundly.
