Ghana COVID-19 Private Sector Fund feeds 61,500 people under the ‘Feed a Kayayei’ project in six days

Barely six days into its operations, the Ghana Private Sector COVID-19 Fund has fed some Sixty One Thousand, Five Hundred (61,500) people.

Giving a detailed breakdown of the Fund’s activities with regards to the ‘Feed a Kayayei’ Project, the originator of the Fund, Ms. Julie Essiam, who is the Commissioner for Support Services at the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) said on its first day, Wednesday April 1, 2020, some 6,000 head-porters, popularly known as kayayei were fed with packs of food in Accra.

According to her, day two saw the team doing some 9,500 in Kumasi and Accra, with the figure plummeting to 12,500 by Monday, April 6, 2020.

BestNewsGH.com reports Ms. Essiam as saying the objective of the Fund is to support the less privileged in society, especially those who earn daily wages during the lockdown period, following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

She said the pandemic provides an opportunity for well meaning Ghanaians to lend a hand of support to the poor and vulnerable in society as the nation battles the COVID-19 virus.

While expressing satisfaction at the in-roads being made by the Fund, particularly the ‘Feed a Kayayei’ project, Ms. Essiam intimated their determination to sustain the food distribution exercise for as long as the lockdown is in place.

Ms. Essiam expressed gratitude to the various organisations and individuals who have contributed both in kind and in cash to keep the project alive.

She extolled others who can support the initiative to do so to enable them expand its coverage in terms of numbers, as they strive to complement government’s efforts at containing the pandemic.

So far, Ghana’s official COVID-19 case count stands at 287.

As part of measures to ensure an effective campaign against the pandemic, the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been announced as the Chairman of Ghana’s COVID-19 Daily Monitoring Team.

The COVID-19 monitoring team, made up of members from key stakeholders leading the  charge against the virus, meets daily under the Chairmanship of the Vice President to assess progress and challenges, as well as coordinate the urgent  distribution of required PPEs to frontline health workers.
