The GaDangme Concerned Youth Association (GDCYA) has welcomed calls for the takeover of Obonu TV, one of the many staples of the state-run Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), by Ghanaian business magnate and founder of McDan Group of Companies, Dr. Daniel McKorley.

GDCYA says it believes the move is in the right direction since, in its view, it will revamp the operations of the TV channel which is dedicated to the GaDangme community.

President of the group, Nii Ayaafio Tetteh I noted in a press release on Tuesday, 23 July 2019 that the next phase of the TV station under Mr McKorley will witness a transformation that will push the influence of the GaDangme language, culture and traditions as well as enhance the socio-economic lives of the indigenes.

“We are fully in support of handing over Obonu TV to McDan,” Nii Ayaafio Tetteh I stated, adding that Dr. McKorley has been influential and “a pillar for GaDangmes in numerous ways and we are hopeful that his role at Obonu TV will further uplift GaDangme development”.

Nii Ayaafio Tetteh I, however, cautioned that Mr McKorley should ensure that he does not pursue parochial interests after gaining ownership but “GaDangme must come first and not his personal issues”.

He lamented that Obonu TV has been saddled with financial constraints and was hopeful that the injection of capital into the operations of the TV station after Dr. McKorley’s acquisition, will improve its productivity and efficiency.

He warned detractors of the move against politicising the group’s position, stressing: “We are not into NPP or NDC but the promotion of our heritage”.

The Staff Union of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) on Monday, 8 July 2019 raised concerns about the privatisation of some GBC channels over fears of job losses.

However, Nii Ayaafio Tetteh I says he hopes the acquisition will not lead to job losses.
